A HSRC Research Ethics Committee (REC) was established on 27 November 2002.  The HSRC REC is registered with the South African National Health Research Ethics Council of the SA National Department of Health (NHREC No 290808-015) and also has US OHRP Federal-wide Assurance (FWA) accreditation (FWA 00006347, IRB No. 00003962).The HSRC research ethics committee is chaired by Prof. Douglas Wassenaar. The HSRC Research Ethics Committee was established with the primary purposes of (a) reviewing and monitoring research proposals and practices in the HSRC from an ethical perspective; (b)  promoting respect for human rights in research, as well as ethical values and research integrity, both within the HSRC and within the broader social sciences community in South Africa. SASAS as an HSRC project is subject to the ethics review process as determined by the HSRC REC.
